leaving on a jet plane again

So like I'm still kinda tired and all that jazz but obviously not tired enough, or something. Just booked my Perth flights; leave next Thursday at 2, and I get there an hour afterwards, which is odd considering it takes three hours to fly to Perth, but see there's a little thing called "time difference" and at the moment, given we're still in day light savings, we're three hours ahead right now.
And Joy has her very own seat booked, (not that it was any extra, but they get their own seat, to lay under on an absorbant mat!
Since I've never flown with my guide dog before, all this is interesting information to me; will be very grand to be on a plane with my wonderful dog. I'm curious to see whether she'll show any signs of discomfort; I'm of course hoping not, but some people, including myself have ears popping when taking off and landing; just wonder if some dogs have that trouble? (insert sarcastic tone).
yeah so this will be good!
Am sooo looking forward to seeing [livejournal.com profile] tibiania again; I've missed her, [livejournal.com profile] khoath again (though he doesn't remember me from before; who does, but that's OK as I don't remember a lot about him from then either, so ha, we're even :) and meeting [livejournal.com profile] arwen3791 for the first time; we're gunna have so so much fun! not to mention meeting up with Nick again and meeting a few of the others who I've only spoken too!
And of course just adding it to the list of Australian states I've now been too. :)
I decided I'm going to get the dog food when i get there; a lot easier as I'll be there for ten days!
Also may have to stash me some chocolate for easter just so i can remember my dear giving family, Lol, and that's the only reason mind you; ha!
And now I'm going to write to [livejournal.com profile] australians and see iff anyone wants to meet up!
haven't even eaten yet; I've been bad. about to squeeze an orange juice with my trusty new juicer!
Til Next Time, RdFreak

I travelled with Astra to Melbourne last year, and she coped really well, no discomfort, and slept most of the way, including all the way back to the Gold Coast. I hope your flight goes well, and you have a wonderful time there.

Hi Rachel,
Yeah going to Perth and gaining time is pretty cool.

I would recommend taking a blanket or something just in case. Oscar was very uncomfortable with the absorbant mat and shifted off it within seconds. It is small, and as they move it crinkles, and of course as they naturally move they move off, so a big blanket that you can stick down for the whole footspace is better.

When taking off and landing, it is a good idea to give the dog extra pats or at least keep your hand on her just so she knows you're there and it's OK. Some people talk about giving their dog ice cubes or crackers or something, but I don't know that it is necessary. As you know, of course it is wait and see how your dog reacts.

Also, buying the food their is a good idea too because you usually don't get a baggage allowance for the dog.

cool; thanks for the tip; I'll do that; re bringing the blanket.
Joy is a very calm and collected dog as a rule, so am cinfident she'll be OK but I'll certainly make sure I do reach down and pat her when we take off! :)

I fly fairly often with Prince - I take him treats for take off/landing as he has ear trouble to begin with - little snot now sits up when the plane starts to move waiting for me to hand over the pigs ear etc.

Have a good trip!
Thats really interesting how your dog would behave herself on a plane. I `m really curious about it.)

Have fun in Perth. Safari coped well when he went to Tasmania. I just brought a couple of his dog kibble and gave it to him to clear his ears. You will like it in Perth, it's great over there.
Will have to contact you when you get back, it's been ages.
Take Care
Melissa
