OK what was I doing?
I got up, fed Heartly ra ra .. checked email, loaded this page to post and Dean skyped me; he got it last night! - so twas good to catch up. Course i had a lovely chat to B last night, as well as [livejournal.com profile] lauren_kh (and dialup worked pretty well after a while hey :) and [livejournal.com profile] irish_glitter -- lovely lovely people!
anyway, checking my email this morning gave me a sudden urge to post.
OK the do not call register was set up, last wednesday (I think) for us lucky Aussies who no longer want to get harassed by telemarketting calls. Of course this makes me very happy and I will no doubt register soon, as soon as, either I can get a sighty to come and help me read the graphic, or when they add an audio link so we can listen to the text so we can enter it. .. and this is the thing. It was not even up for a day and email listers were talking about the site, saying how inaccessable it is. I went to the site, and found it pretty good - a lot better than most sites. the only inaccessable thing as far as I could tell (not exactly registering yet) was the graphical text thinggy. And, I think two days later (if memory serves) a lister wrote to both of the email lists stating she had made a DDA (disability discrimination act (1992) complaint. Her reasoning was that she'd contacted the provider (or organization that's in charge of this, or whatever) and they hadn't gotten back to her in a timely manner.
The email I got this morning was from Nadia (from BCA) explaining that BCA were speaking with the people in chartge of the site and they are coming to some agreement about having that good old audio link to read out the graphics to us.
I know it's frustrating as to have a web site and not being able to use it, but what I am really not understanding is this whole idea that some blindys still don't understand it's a sighted world. Blindys still expect equal access for these new projects, and they are so quick to complain. Some of us just need to realize, it is a sighted world, it's not a blindy world and as much as these accessability web standards are encouraged, it may take a while to get some things for us up and running. what's the good of lodging a DDA complaint when BCA is already on the case? I know a lot of BCA encourages individuals to complain which is understandable in some situations, (aspects with the connex trains, for example; another story) but for one web site, there's no point.
this is another reason why I can be pretty negative with the blind community, everyone loves to complain. .. Sure, I have called connex up once to complain about the sometimes lack of announcements but that was once, and after years of using the trains. ..
I know everyone has different patient thresholds, but, I thought I was the most impatient person ever; it would seem not.
I live alone. It's not like I can always access sighty help at a drop of a hat if I need them. some people will argue that I have sighted friends and family; sure, but I rely on them as little as my sighted sibling and peers.
i use to be frustrated at this sighted world - I still can be - everyone can be; it's normal. But, over the years I have come to realize it is a sighty world; meaning the majority of people living here are sighted and will naturally always have their access first and foremost, mainly because, these web site creaters etc. are sighted.
I've never been really good at the best of times when it comes to complaining and complaints. Heck, I always use to cringe when I'd hear Mum complaining to Mcdonalds drive through that the fries were cold, or even that they forgot to give her the hamburger. I use to cringe when Mum would call up tradesmen or furniture places or whatever, to tell them their service hasn't been good enough. I guess I am not one to readily complain. So I am afraid I do cringe when I hear of fellow blindys making complaints, but I zip my lip cos mostly it's understandable. But I do have issue with people lodging DDA complaints about this site so early! gosh some people are sad, just so sad!
I say again, sure, I want to register on this site ASAP but at same time, i realize that it's not going to be recognized til late this month anyway. No excuse? Give them a chance people for crying out loud!
Most of the time, people are trying their best. Most of the time they are only doing what they feel is right by their community. When there's such a minority of blind people about, it's hard to exactly always remember us blindys. I know this; why can't others? why?
rant over!
ah well, some blindys will probably hate me (if reading this post) but I'm just expressing my feelings, something I don't often do with the more, political (as far as we're concerned) related things.
til next time, RdFreak
