current events thanks to Neil
Oct. 5th, 2006 11:50 amI have been listening to Neil Mitchell on 3AW since I can remember, not every day; sometimes not even for weeks at a time (which is why I was so surprised about Ross W being off air for some time); But, i have found Neil's program to be very enlightening and out of pretty much all forms of media, I seem to want to learn from him; learn about how our politics work, learn about current affairs surrounding our local community and country as a whole, etc. I had indeed told him this via email. never got a responce but that's OK. I seem to find a lot of other journalists boring and so I care not to learn about anything much. I guess, I feel that out of all the current affair announcers on 3AW, Neil is the best at engaging with his audience. All the others seem quite typical (unfortunately common) in their approach. they ask for calls, but then practically hang up on them when they disagree with the views.
Neil hardly does this, though I do have to say that I've noticed he does it a little more lately. I also notice unfortunately that he seems to interupt his guests and get more aggresive when he disagrees. I am at a loss to understand why talkback announcers (whether they be current affairs or general supporting chat) constantly get away with rudeness to people. but that's a different story, (we've got Keith Macgowan - overnighters, who I can't listen to any more cos of his constant rudeness to everyone. .. people call up who may sound a bit whacked, and he'll play this little dittty at the conclusion of the call .. "when you've lost your marbles just call Keith. .. Avis calls. every single time without fail, he asks her who looks after her. and when she replies "the Lord" he'll play .. "halleluja!" course it's funny in a way, though cruel, maybe once, twice, but every time? no! .. and .. I won't even mention Bruce Mansfield!
anyway I'm getting ahead of myself and into another thought process.
I've been, more so accidently listening to Neil more so lately, every day. Just turn the radio on cos I like to hear the news and stuff, and he pops on and a lot of his stories hook me in. I now have become interested in broadcast journalism which is one of my preferences for next year.
anyway, I had meant to comment on stuff that I have found interesting or something I wanted to dibate in here but, I hadn't been doing it. Something I do want to comment on now is the sad affair involving Naiomi Robbsin (from today tonight) going over to Indonesia or somewhere? (can't even remember the exact country) to save six-year old WahWah (could be wrong spelling) from getting eaten by canibles. Both his parents have died, and apparently the people think he's cursed, so they are going to wait til he's a teen, then eat him! absolute rubbish! what stupid human beings. anyway Naiomi (and co) were told it'd do him less good if they were to bring him out here cos they are likely to suicide anyway while trying to get use to this way of life. How dare they decide poor WahWah's fate. anyway there was talk of Naiomi being deported for travelling over there with the wrong visa. she's back, don't really know what happened. but poor WahWah is still over there! :( and, apparently channels seven and nine had gotten into some sort of fude about this (who can run the story and who had the right to), and, I think, (though I could be wrong) it was someone from nine who was wearing a Tea-shirt saying "save WahWah" on the front, and on the back it read "for later"! my gosh, is this TV politics gone wrong?
As I say, there's actually been quite a few stories from Neil I should have commented on at the time.
He's a good campaigner for what he believes in though as well.
Til next time, RdFreak
