Well, I survived the 45 minutes or so I was under the MRI scanner!
My back was so so so sore though, not to mention my legs; everything cos I had to stay still pretty much throughout the whole thing; literally! apparently I did a good job of this, but, between each scan, I aimed to riggle a little to get more comfortable but someone from the next room would say in the intercom "try and keep as still as you can!"
So I was on an extremely narrow, hard hospital bed type thing and my head was in a slot thing. then the bed was raised and moved in a tunnel up to my arms. Then the tecnnicians were talking to me from another room through the headphones I put on to also block out a lot of the scanning noise.
the only task I had to do was press the correct buttons accordingly to determine which note was higher out of a few hundred sets of pairs that were given to me. Between the tones I would hear the scanners motor and this was a note in itself - about an A flat from memory.
The dozens of other scans involved me just laying there as still as I could be, sometimes meant to try and just blank my mind, other times I was allowed "to think of anything." Well, I tried to have my mind blank but I don't know if it worked very well.
and all the scanning stages had different motors and different sounds.
anyway, boy was i glad when they announced "OK we're finished." I sat up, stretched, tried to stand but my leg cramped big time! anyway I didn't know whether my back would feel normal again but luckily it did.
Caught a cab back here after that.
Oh Catherine had said in her lengthy explanation about the whole thing that they are required to tell us if they see any abnormalities in our brain. i said it was a good thing, but apparently "they" can't go ahead with the scan if one doesn't want to know. so yeh .. so far, would seem like i'm normal. I told her I'd be curious though because of the whole contraversy surrounding why I'm blind; whether I was slightly brain dammaged as a result of the birth etc.
I am looking forward to the results though! :) unfortunately we will never see individual results cos it takes too long, but we see the research complete; alright but .. doh!
Also while I was waiting to have mine, there was a little boy having his. i wondered what for; poor thing; hope nothing serious was found!
yeh, interesting experience though!
til next time, RdFreak
