so this morning, i heard on my favourite news radio station, that a German doctor residing in Horsham (Victorian suburb) is being denied a permanent visa to Australia because his 13-year old son has Down syndrome, and "will be a medical burden"; um, talk about the most ridiculous thing I've heard for a long time! Well to be honest, I am hearing quite a number of ridiculous things from our government of late!
wow, I don't know where to start with this one. The doctor came here to work a few years ago when we had a shortage. so now the shortage is over, just pack em up and go home?!
He actually spoke to Ross and John, and he spoke so well! His English was absolutely perfect. (I know, I have been known to be a sinic with bad english) but this guy, wow!
As I heard the story, I thought "I bet Neil Mitchel will take this up" and, so I was right. Actually the guy who fills in for Neil, channel 7's news reporter Nick Mccallum will be in the hot seat. He will be talking to the head of Immigration, and I certainly hope he gets somewhere. -- I only wish I could be here to listen to the interview, but I may be able to find it tonight on the 3AW website.
In other news, i did get my m-power delivered to work yesterday. I certainly had a fine old time exploring the many new features I wasn't privlidged to with my old sorry braillenote. -- I had no idea it had an FM radio. I thought the radio only referred to internet radio. -- so cool!
Last night, I attempted to get it hooked up to my wireless router, but alas, that wasn't to be. As I don't know much about wireless configurations for the routher, I did try and tweek a few things, but no. -- I've got a stack of friends who i know would help me, but as Dad is not here, I'm going to ask uncle J if he'd help. Dad says he's an expert on wireless, so it will be good.
Going to take it to work today and play around with it. -- oh, there was (and still is) battery life in it, even though it was shipped from Sydney. They prob charged it up there.
Oh, and i looove the case. sure better than what I got before, which was nofin. The case covered it completely, yet, one can fold it back and have full access to everything! It's amazingly neat!
Right, think i will now go and proofread this, (since it's appearing on a public site; while i do this all the time, some typing/spelling errors are not picked up.) Hopefully, with my new m-power, I can get back to reading books in braille, thereby, allowing improvement on my spelling skills once again.
til next time, RdFreak

Actually, I read somewhere that he's still the only fulltime GP in the area anyway, so there goes the theory about the shortage being over. :) I know what you mean though. Charming isn't it? I notice that we don't seem to chuck out any of the low life contributing to crime and social unrest, and the cost to the community of keeping them in prison or on an unemployment benefit would far outweigh the cost to the community of supporting a kid with downs syndrome I'm sure.

well that's totally it, and where this place is screwing up really fast. Low-life criminals need to be shipped straight back to where they came from, whether they've become Australian citizens or not. *grrrr*

Hey,
Yeah, I heard this on the news this morning as well, half asleep and getting ready for placement, but it sure woke me up. :)
This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened. I know of a couple of blind people in the UK whose families tried to emigrate here (one about 20 or so years ago and the other fairly recently). Both families were refused residency because of the fact there was a blind person in the family, and they'd be a "burden" to society. Just for curiosity's sake, the family who applied recently to come here reapplied but did not include the blind person in their application. This time, their application was accepted.
I believe there needs to be much more public awareness of this. So many people have been shocked when I've told them the above story, so clearly, the fact that the government are denying people citizenship rights isn't common knowledge.

that is just unbelievable! I've never heard of this kind of thing happening at all.
I suppose it's the idea that the person with a disability would have to be put on a pension, etc; extra $$$ you know? but that's such discrimination!
