So there's an add campaign that's started up on the radio (not sure about tV); have only heard it a few times as yet. -- Apparently, random people (I'd imagine more youth than any other, but I could very well be wrong) will be randomly searched in the city by police for knives and other weapons. if any are found, there will be a $1000 fine issued! This is awesome; it's sad that it has to come to this certainly, but it's had too and it's the best thing I've heard to happen re crime in a while. -- I heard a shocking statistic a few days ago; one in four teenagers carry knives around; that is just so so disturbing; unbelievable in fact.
Also in other kinda related news, i just heard this morning on 3AW news that there has been discussion of having armed guards on each train after 6 PM. Again, sad it's had to come to this, but getting more and more necessary. -- Each time parents have protested about my occasionally catching the train at night in the past, I've told them that I'd always felt safe due to the shorter trains and therefore, more people, which had certainly been true. as there has been heaps of people, i did feel safe; I guess now I'm not so sure.
Will be making an appointment soon to have me ears cleaned.

I've seen it once on TV. I believe they said the fines for drunk and disorderly have doubled too.

Unfortunately lots of people on the train doesn't mean idiots won't still attack. There's been at least one report where a group attacked a rather full train and if memory serves it wasn't all that late either. A lot of keeping safe on trains is how you carry yourself and staying out of conflict if something happens. Once at night I feared for my safety as there was a guy pacing and raving and these idiots were trying to upset him more. I got off and went to the driver, who let me ride with him.

I'm all for guards on the trains - I'd also love a quiet carriage but somehow don't see them implementing that here.

ah yes, I certainly always stay out of conflicts. Sometimes I totally feel like saying something as people can be shouting really loud but you never know how they'll react. :(

It's sad all the crimes happening these days. I'm all for more police and guards. My dad sees it all the time with crime due to being in the transport industry. Just like last week there were youths at my local station who were drunk and were being aggressive to passengers getting off and one youth got hit by the train. He is still alive but bad facial injuries. I no longer feel safe going on public transport even at day but have to. I try not to go at night what so ever.

Yes i believe I heard about that incident you speak of.
Yeh I'm prob too confident for my own good sometimes. But yeh, I think with these things 9in place, crime will decrease at least a bit.

It is so sad that there are more and more crimes nowadays. It becomes dangerous even just to go out and walk the streets. :((((
