I had a lot more to say, but that will have to wait.
This is a quick entry before i leave for singing to say that I've heard so much about this Apple iphone that I am going to try it.
I'm hoping they will have them at the optus shop at forestHill, if not, I will need to go to the apple store at Chadston.
If I fall in love with it, I'll sell my KNFB reader of course. I heard there was an application whereby, we take a picture, then send it to a server to have it translated back into text.
Anyway more later. But hope they have em.
And now off i go to singing.
Til Next time, RdFreak

ocr on iphone is nowhere near as good as on the knfb reader, but might get better in time. sms and key entry is slow on iphone and battery is only good for 18 hours or so. interested to hear your thoughts once you've played.

Hi Rachael, Just curious as an awful lot of people seem to be ditching their Nokias and getting IPhones. Is there anything in particular that the IPhone offers you that you can't already do with the N82 with KNFB? I had a play with an IPhone a couple of weeks ago, and while I was quite impressed at how accessible they've managed to make a touch screen device, the fact that it takes 27 finger movements to dial an 8 digit number would I think eventually drive me mad. Also I wasn't sure that even with practice you'd be able to text or type emails as quickly as with a Qwerty Phone like the E71, or even a standard Nokia with predictive text.
I think if I didn't already own talks etc and I was in the market for a new phone I'd have to consider the IPhone because it works out of the box, but I'm curious as to why so many people who already own an accessible phone are changing over, so would be interested to know your reasoning.

Cheers.

Damo.

Hey Damo,
I guess you could say, I am jumping ahead of myself slightly. I'm not saying I'll definitely get one. I'm just quite keen to try one as I've heard quite a few podcasts raving about it, not to mention others who are probably known to both of us in the blind community here.
So, i don't really have an answer for you, other than the above.
I guess it's just appealing because it does talk out of the box, so one wouldn't need to upgrade their screen reader for even more functionality.
I'm certainly only interested in doing things the quickest ways, so if typing on it promises to be slow, definitely forget it. I myself always, always use predictive texting.
But I heard a podcast on blindcooltech today where the guy was pretty fast with typing.
So yeh, guess that's the long answer; I'm just curious to try it at this stage, and maybe I sound like I'm jumping the gun a bit cos of the built-in I Pod and the GPS.
I'm pretty disappointed with the KNFB reader. I can't seem to get it to do much, and I don't like the N82, and find I am continuing to use my 6120 classic anyway.
So, I do hope I'm not hooked in for the wrong reasons when I try it. Lol!
Cheers! :)

Hi Rachael, Fair enough, as I said I was really just curious. Incidentally, have you tried Wayfinder on either of your Nokias at all? as far as accessible GPS applications go it's quite nice. I'm not sure how accesssible the GPS apps for the IPhone are at the moment.I was also interested in your comments re the KNFB. I've just bought a secondhand one, although I won't actually receive it until later in the week, but have tried Shon's a couple of times and didn't find it too bad. What did you find that you didn't like about it and the N82? Was it mostly the accuracy or lack of?

Cheers.

Well I bought a trekker from Humanwear a few years ago, and find that very good, though obviously more inconvenient in the way that we have to carry two extra pieces of equipment around.
From the little I have bothered to use the KNFB reader to date, I just find I can't get the accuracy.
Also I just don't like the N82 really. it would be a bit better if we were able to take that rubber casing off, but we can't for the sake of KNFB reader. Also, it's harder to find things than with my 6120 classic. there's sub after sub after sub menu, and, for some reason, I find sometimes I am able to go down menues using the down arrow, while other times, I have to go left/right arrow within the same menus. There's prob a setting I can change, but again, I'd be damned if I can find it, Lol
I'm just being picky, but as I said before, i just want to be able to get to where I want to go quickly.
Cheers!
